Chapter 17:

The Hounds

“Beer.” Kristin put down a dozen small bottles on the countertop and grinned at Andi. “It’s your turn to order pizza. It seems like forever since we’ve done this. Where’s Sarah?”

“Not home from work yet. Her boss kept her late again.” Andi pulled the bottle opener from the drawer and flipped the top from two beers.

“But Noa’s here.”

Andi glanced out to the yard where Noa was rearranging the stones in the mandala. “I collected her from school.”

“You? Ms Forever Childfree?”

“Being childfree doesn’t mean I won’t help out a friend. Noa’s a good kid.”

Kristin’s gaze softened. “She is.” She switched her stare to Andi. “How’s it going for you two? Living together.”

“Fine. Pretty well actually. Sarah’s easy company.”

“Now she recognises it!” Kristin took her beer and slurped a mouthful. “I’ve always told you how lovely Sarah is and how you should totally date her—for real. Not this pretend stuff.”

“You make it sound so easy.” Andi put the rest of the beers in the fridge. It meant she didn’t have to look at Kristin’s knowing face.

“Have there been any moments when you looked into each other’s eyes and the sparks leaped like the Easter bilby? Any accidental touches as you both reach for the kettle at the same moment? Sweet moments in a darkened room as you both watch Noa sleep?”

“You read way too many romance novels.” Andi shifted, momentarily uncomfortable in her own skin as she recalled last night’s conversation in the dark. Sarah sleeping next to her. How she’d woken later in the night, unused to someone in the bed with her and watched Sarah’s sleeping face for a few moments. How relaxed and peaceful she’d looked. How beautiful.

“You can’t blame me for wanting to live vicariously through my friends. There’s fuck all fucking in my life right now.”

Andi huffed a laugh. “Should I throw those same questions back at you about your housemate? How’s Tariq during the reach-for-the-beer-together moments, the accidental-walk-in-at-a-personal-time-in-the-bathroom moments? Or the good old my-back-aches-can-I-have-a-massage moments?”

“Now who’s been reading the romance novels?” Kristin sniggered. “None of those with Tariq. He’s too focussed on his studies, work, and sending money home to his family. Don’t worry, I’ll quiz Sarah when she gets home.”

Andi gazed at the benchtop to hide her pink cheeks. And what would Sarah say? Would she mention their kiss? That they’d shared the bed last night?

Noa wandered in from the backyard. “Can I have something to eat, Andi?”

“Sure. You sit there and talk to Kristin—I’m sure you’ll find it educational—and I’ll make you a snack.”

“No carrots.” Noa made a face.

“The trade-off is then you get double apple.”

“’Kay.”

Andi pulled out some crackers and hummus, sliced an apple, put it all on a plate, and set it down by Noa.

“I’m starving too,” Kristin said. “But I’ll wait for pizza. I hope Sarah comes home soon.”

As if on cue, a key sounded in the lock, and then Sarah burst in, dumping her work bag on the couch, and pulling her jacket off almost in the same movement.
